Pathshala: The Next Generation of American Jains
(Version2 – July 22, 2017)

Religion Environment of Indian and American Jain Youth
Like any other immigrant communities, we Jain Americans are trying best to sustain our identity and working hard to ensure the next generation continues our Jain values, traditions, and rich heritage.
Growing up in India is a bit different. Jain youth by virtue of living in religious environments, attain knowledge of Jain religion and values from monks, elders, by visiting temples, listening to sermons, reading Jain literature, going on pilgrimage and through several other venues available to them.
It’s a bit different in America. In comparison, the environment for American Jains is religiously dilute. Unlike in India, Jains here are spread too thinly to offer our youth a conducive Jain environment necessary to sustain the Jain way of life. Also, the accessible resources are replaced by formidable barriers of distance, culture, language and surroundings.
American Jain Youth Culture and Jain Pathshala
How do we bridge this gap? How do we bring the community together and pass on our values to our youth?
To answer several of these types of questions, JAINA Education Committee was instituted. The Education Committee with help from several volunteers prepare and published a structured curriculum and Pathshala programs primarily based on American culture.
The word Pathshala, which literally means “learning place,” is traditionally used to describe classes where you learn about religion from gurus and teachers. In India, the focus is primarily towards the memorization of Sutras and rituals.
An attempt is made at American Pathshala to align and encourage youth towards understanding Jain principles and rituals. It is an exciting reincarnation of this age-old institution.
The main goal of the Pathshalas is to teach our kids based on current environment, the message of compassion and nonviolence in all aspects of life, encourage vegetarianism and vegan way of life, use environmental friendly product, and live alcohol and drug free lifestyle. This stems from a desire to practice compassion and nonviolence as well as instill Jain values, our rich culture and heritage.
The main function of the Education Committee is to prepare and publish non-sectarian Jain Educational material for children, youth, and young Jain professionals raised in North American cultural environment which should meet the above goal.
The religious material should be in simple American English which will allow them to effectively apply Jain principles and practices in their everyday lives.
The Jain children have grown up in American culture where:
- Both men and women are treated equally. Jain religious principles are not and should not be a male dominated principles. Several of our rituals are male dominated rituals.
- Proper explanation is needed with reasons and must appeal to our common sense. It is for a WHY generation Jains.
- No magic, Blind faith, and super power help from heavenly gods (Devs) and goddesses (Devis) by reciting Mantras are accepted and hence self-efforts and self-initiatives are valued.
- Humanitarian services and environmental protection activities take priority over traditional temple/sthanak rituals.
- All other religions and their cultures which are positive in nature treated properly and equally respected (recent survey shows that about 70% Jain children are marrying Americans).
- Form compassion point of view, under the current environment, the American Jain youths understand that strict vegetarian (Vegan) food is more compassionate over any animal base foods such as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, ice-cream, sweets, ghee. All commercial dairy product consumption involves significant violence and killing of five sense (Panchendriya) animals. Hence all YJA conventions serve mostly vegan foods and use environmental friendly paper plates and cups. No plastics/foam plates and cups are used.
Also, some of the Jain ritual Sutras are male dominated and the indicative of the superiority of our religion over any other religions. Hence the committee has a very difficult task to implement traditional rituals without modifying these sutras and rituals. Very few Jain Acharyas and scholars of India would help us in the preparation of Jain ritual material suitable for American culture.
Since our Pathshala material is prepared for American children, the committee has compromised several rituals and traditions which are place, time, and cultural dependent. However, under no circumstances, the basic Jain principles which reflects universal truth are compromised.
To date the committee has published 9 Pathshala books and 6 reference books for our children, youths and professionals.
There are more than 25 committee members performing various task of preparing, printing and distributing the material. As per our recent survey, there are about 4000 students ranging from elementary level to college level, attend Jain Pathshala classes in their centers and use the Jaina Education Material. These Pathshalas have about 400 teachers and supporting staff.
In many cases, the parents of the kids in the Pathshala are themselves the teachers and are known to the kids first as uncles or aunties. There are about 400 adults offering volunteer service as teachers and other help. These teachers are aided by a very valuable resource like Jain eLibrary (www.jainelibrary.org) which JAINA Education Committee has produced.
Pathshala Curriculum
A comprehensive, grade wise curriculum in simple English is presented in these 9 Pathshala and 6 reference books. These uniform books available to all the pathshalas and are sold at extremely low prices. These books are never copyrighted and the soft copies (pdf files) are all freely available on the JAINA and Jain eLibrary websites for easy downloads.
The JAINA Educational material covers basic Jain philosophy such as fundamental principles, the path of liberation; six universal substances; Nine Tattvas, theory of Karma, Anekantvad and Fourteen Gunsthanaks.
In conduct section students learn about Panch Parmeshti; Jain Ascetics, Mahavrats and Anuvrats, Bhavnas, Leshyas, Panchachar, Jain ethics, humanitarian and Jivdaya services, environment protection, and Jain yoga.
In literature section, the students learn about Jain Swetambar Agams and commentary literature, Digambar shastras, Jain history, life stories of various Tirthankars, important Acharyas, and virtuous shravaks/shravikas.
Students are also taught simple rituals like going to the Temples in both Swetamber and Digambar traditions, Pooja, Six Avashykas, Paryushan and Das Laxana. The sutra classes emphasize the meaning of sutra rather than blindly memorizing them.
The Educational material cover all traditions of Jainism. Swetamber, Digambar or Sthanakvasi parents, all send their kids to our unified pathshalas. Medium of instruction is always English but Gujarati and Hindi classes are offered as language studies.
These books are continuously upgraded from the suggestions and comments received from the teachers, parents, and students. In fact, senior most students at some pathshalas undertake the task of revising materials in these books from the perspective of relevance, readability and age appropriateness. Some of the earliest books have now been revised five times!
The Education committee also conducts classes, workshop, seminars, and lectures at various centers in North America and other countries. It also provides a medium for interactions among pathshala teachers (Google Group) of North America.
Teachers from many centers contributed to finalize the uniform curriculum for Pathshala in teacher’s conference held at various times. Each center uses this curriculum and implemented to fit their size of student body, available teachers and class rooms.
Teachers from various Pathshalas keep in touch to learn from each other to improve the quality of teaching. In addition to the uniform books throughout all Jain centers, Pathshala teachers hold a Teachers’ conference during JAINA Conventions. In that meeting, teachers share their experiences and exchange project ideas as though members of a fraternity.
With all the goodwill and togetherness displayed at this gathering, these teachers make no effort to hide their zeal to display accomplishments of their students at the main event for all the Pathshalas – Jain Academic Bowl (JAB) competition. Teams from different Pathshalas are designated as junior teams or senior teams and undergo 3 to 4 rounds of elimination to win the most coveted prize of “Best Team”.
Brief Description of Pathshala Books
The following link gives brief description of each Pathshala and reference book. It also gives the link to download the pdf file of each book.
Summary
In America, the Jain unity has played the dominant role in our progress. Because very few Shvetambar or Digambar monks or nuns come to the United States when they are fully ordained, the American Jain community has lost its dominant pattern of close interaction between lay people and mendicants. Most American Jains agree that the sectarian streams of Jainism that have been significant in India for over 2,000 years are fast losing their currency in twentieth-century America.
The main objective of the committee is to prepare, publish, and distribute the Jain Pathshala material for American youth living in the American cultural environment. Hence, we have to made few changes in the traditional rituals and procedures.
All the above shows the zeal with which Jain parents in North America are providing religious, cultural and spiritual training for their kids in a language they understand, in the culture they live in, and more importantly in a non-sectarian and non-male dominated manner in projecting JAINS of Tomorrow.
The most famous Sutra of Dasvaikalik Agam (Sutra no 56) States
First is knowledge then conduct or action; that is how the disciplined (Sadhak) live. How would an ignorant discriminate between good and evil for himself or for others”
- Dashvaikalik Sutra
We would like to apologize if any traditional adult feels that our approach in preparing JAINA education material in America is inappropriate.
We seek forgiveness for any mistake, oversight, understatement, or overstatement in the education material. We request you to use the material objectively and provide positive suggestions so that we can incorporate them into future revisions.

Nice article.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mr. Pavin Shah for giving us insight on what the goals and reasons are for Pathshala. I believe we are doing the right thing considering the choices we have here.
ReplyDeleteAnd to be completely honest, I think the younger generation here has the potential to understand Jainism from first philosophical principles, rather than all the cultural baggage that has been added over thousands of years in India. This will make the understanding deeper and more genuine.
Dear dear Pravin K. Shah,
ReplyDeleteThis is splendid. Not only I appreciate but also I admire. For certain, I assure you, this will go a long way. For more than half a century I have been repeatedly telling from various forums that a time has come when pontiffs and patriarchs / preceptors should assemble to cordially resolve and evolve a new code of conduct for the house holders and the recluse. This should be done with respect to the changed global developments and of course without losing the sap of basic canonical principles. Keeping wherever relevant and deleting/modifying wherever irrelevant. It's high time that sectarian differences should sink making room for coming together and stand united. Let us think globally and act locally, keeping the lamp burning bright. I know this is not that easy. But it it is inevitable.Somebody should bell the cat ! Glad you have done it. If we do not do it who will, if not now when?
Hearty Congratulations, Please convey my respects to all those who have done this possible,
With Kind Regards
Hampana
Dear Pravin Bhai
ReplyDeleteVery Nice Email.
We jains here in Dubai have definitely ensured that not only "Pathshala" education is important but every parent has a role to play in front of a new generation, which you call as "WHY generation" Parents have to be ideally following the principles of jainism which we learned as first generation coming from INDIA. During our child hood it was very routine to go to derasar and to Upasharay and visit lots of families and neighbors who were Jains, We had so many places to go within each cities during Paryushan and so many tapaswis whom we met, while new generation does not have such previledge.
It is important that we raise our children with a Clear vision on JAINISM as differentiate with other Faiths whom we respect.
However, when we clear know the fact that other faith has NO Objection to NON Vegetarian food as way of living and they have such in their routine living and daily activity. Our interaction with other faith should be on grounds of PEACE, FRIENDSHIP AND BROTHERHOOD only and to have clear differentiation to our children that we are not of same belief just because of Interfaith/ Tolerance.
Jainism and Vegan / Vegetarinism is principle of raising our kids , Education material is read and followed by kids , but Behaviour of Parents is more important in CHARACTER BUILDING of the Kids.
E.g Jains family emphasis on not eating Onions and Potatos while 1 gm of gold needs 1000 Kilos of excavation leading to killing of more microbes and small jivas. Buying of Gold is also a sin and such is traditionally overlooked. Another E.g Profiting from Business with lots of Business Margins in unethical manners but still not eating onions, such is modern mindset amongst grown up and respected business people. Another Eg. is many wastage of natural resources like water, Drinking of cow milk and having yoghurts in daily life. We need to focus on 360 degrees of Jainism as I have learned if we wanting to have our child focus on Jaininsm, Parent Conduct is of more important in formation of Character of kids than the Books they read.
Key Important Points which Jain Kids needs to know besides our Vegan way of life.
· All Jivas are Pious and due to Karmas have different paths
· We need to respect the Jainism Teachings of MOKSHA as our ultimate goals
· We need to also focus on JIN DEV who is our Ultimate Param ATMA and All our souls have emerged from him and even Tirthankars worshipped them (despite now jaininsm of 20th Century believes we have same ATMA as Param ATMA and is as pious, so no concept of GOD)
· It is important to learn Sutras, But also important to learn the Fundamentals of Jainism and its key Principles and its use in daily life .(Ahimsa, Anekantavada, Aparigraha, Satya, Brahmacharya, Asteya)
· Children marrying outside of Jainism is becoming common in USA and I have seen so many of such incidents amongst my friends and relatives, the key reason is many American families are now getting disconnected with INDIA. Since we left our western passport plans (Canada and USA Green card) , In last 5 years, I have made a clear habit of going to INDIA, meet extended family, Meet Jain families, Go to Jain places and Going to the historical places in INDIA with child /Kids and clearly advise them of our history, culture, temples, sacrifies done by our forefathers in managing the JAIN Principles for over few hundred years despite MUGHAL and IMPERICAL Empires wanting to convert by force or by other methods and how our forefathers holded on to the JAINISM. It is important to be in touch with roots.
· It is good to love all Humans and consideration of Marriage should have Love as focus over FAITH, However the Marriage between Jains will ensure the religion continuity to upcoming generations.
Once Again Pravin Bhai, your emails are very important as guiding light to so many Jains and we salute you for the efforts you do for teachings of PEACE, Brotherhood, Non Violence in daily life and wanting to update the teachings of such to new generations.
Regards
SANDEEP MEHTA
Respected Pravinbhai and the Education Committee,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for this letter. We believe this is absolutely the right approach for our Jain children as well as adults interested in learning principles of Jainism while living in Countries outside India. With the material developed by JAINA Education Committee for Pathshala will not only help children learn, it will help Parents and Teacher be able to answer questions and guide them appropriately.
We were thoroughly impressed by the youth activities, their knowledge of Jain Religion and enthusiasm at the competitions. Thank you all very much for such a great job in preparing these books and thanks to all teachers who worked with these youngsters in training them, arming them with correct knowledge. It was a moment of great pride for all of us present at the JAINA Convention 2017 to attend JAB Competition.
Thank you again for writing this email. We will circulate it to all Jain Member families in Jain Samaj of South Central PA based in Harrisburg PA. We do have a Pathshala which has about 7-9 young children in age group 5-10.
Jai Jinendra!
Hansa & Kanti Jasani
Dear Shri Pravinbhai and Team members,
ReplyDeleteIndeed a great job you are doing to nourish roots of culture in North America. This will be a model for all NRI Jains across the world. Not only that, this model of a single platform for all Jains will be looked upon to emulate by people from India so far as the unity of different intra-jainism sects are concerned which is a primary need towards reaching to anekanta. In a way, why culture of the new generation is good and will help in shedding illogical paraphernalia which may have crept in over time. Amongst all religions, the core principles of Tirthankaras are the sturdiest to stand test of any time or open minded questioning because of their being purely scientific basis. During my visit to USA, I observed that parents are desperate to inculcate the narrow sectarian values / rituals rather than open minded knowledge of core principles while respecting other varied belief systems and this approach fails as children seem it as impractical and seclusive. Empowering parents with such open minded approach will be another advantage of this model. Arranging a group trip to India for these youth can also prove a binding and culturally nourishing avenue. Hearty Compliments to Everyone involved with this enlightening endeavour. Namaskar to All. L. D. Patel
Dear PRAVINBHAI,
ReplyDeleteYour mail tries to provide the present status of Jains in America and the issues they face in practicing the religion in an environment quite different from India, where the circumstances for observing the code of conduct are perhaps more favourable.
While I appreciate the anxiety to somewhat modify some rituals, perhaps if I understood right the concept of Purush Pradhan dharma and similar issues that may appear incongruous in a modern American way of life, one should tread very carefully while considering modifying or to put it differently reforming traditional scriptures or views depicted there in to suit current prevailing thinking and attitudes.
Jain Dharma in accordance with the scriptures is undeniably a Purush Pradhan Dharma and for very logical reasons, well explained. It does not assume any derogatory attitude towards women and they are highly respected within the general structure established within the Sangh order. While interpreting the roles of males and females and their relative positions and status in the Jain order, the enlightened view provided in the Jain Agams is sacrosanct and not subject to any fundamental modification. Over the centuries some thinkers did take liberties to ignore or misinterpret the Agams. They ended up violating Jinvachan, an unpardonable sin.
To summarise do not attempt to modify Jain Agam ordained principles in any manner to suit adverse or prevailing modern attitude and sentiments. It is better to understand and feel regret that one is not able to observe an ideal code of conduct laid down in the Agams or the inability to sometimes reconcile modern thinking on male and female equality which may differ in a subtle manner relatively from the enlightened reality explained in the Agams. Agams are sacrosanct and inviolable. Code of conducts do suffer in being observed depending on time and place and the vigilance a society exercises in abiding with the original ideal conduct laid out in the Agams. One hopes that someday in the future conditions will be more conducive in America to the practice of ideal Jain conduct. Without generalising it has to be acknowledged that there are many Jain devotees in America who manage to practice their religion to the highest standards that maybe prevailing in India.
With best wishes,
Premal Kapadia
Jai Jinendra
ReplyDeleteThis is to congratulate you on organising such a wonderful initiative of jain pathshalas in America.
I also have a batch of students with whom we sit for once in a week jain pathshala. We have covered topics like 6 Dravya, 7 tattva, 6 avashyak, and lots more.
Here children have a difficulty in understanding the typical Hindi and Sankrit language, so I have translated a lot of syllabus to English language so that it makes Jainism easier for students studying in English medium schools.
I am also willing to organise an intensive jain camp for children during Daslakshan Mahaparv.
If you want, We can surely collaborate and organise such camps and pathshala in America.
Thankyou .. Regards.
Megha Jain
I fully agree that each generation should revisit the rituals or the peripherirs of religion to be understood in proper context and in relation to how we understand.
ReplyDeleteI strongly believe that for any theory or practice to be universally valid needs to satisfy the condition of its being valid today or in contemporary world. Since what Mahaveera said was in answer to the contemporary quarries of that time, there is nothing wrong in revisiting them in current contexts.
I feel there are many statements or fundamentals are not interpreted properly. Aprigraha is one such which is often interpreted as accumulation. But wisdom is the most powerful accumulation which our soul continues to accumulate and it is its final and complete accumulation that is Kavalya gyan.

Manak Singhi
Jain Pathshala is an excellent initiative. I have always been worried how this knowledge will be passed to the next generation. You guys have done a superb job in ensuring that.
ReplyDeleteDear Pravin Bhai,
ReplyDeleteI wholeheartedly appreciate the initiatives taken by JAINA in equipping North American Jains (as you so call them), with knowledge from our Shatra, Agams & Sutra.
I'm sure you are facing challenges in your endeavour vis-a-vis prevailing cultural & social beliefs and practices in North America in the absence of Jain Sadhus & Sadhvis.
I agree that there is a good amount of Gender Equality, Respect to other faith in America or other countries where Jains reside, All Jains must never lose the though that the scriptures like Agams & Kalpasutra are the streams of knowledge from the 'Deshna ' & wisdom of no simple beings, but from Kevali's who have attained Kevalgyan.
So called Forward thinking or "Modern" (as opposed to "Traditional" ) Jains living anywhere in the world should never try to use "WHY" generation thought process as an excuse to moderate/modify/degenerate the ideals that Jain Dharma (I prefer not to use jainism) stands for.
There are very clear dis-similarities (not contradictions), in the major 2 sects & other sub-sects, of jain dharma. By combining these into the Pathshala curriculum, don't the American Jains get confused ?
You quoted from Dashvaikalik Sutra... "First is Knowledge". Why mix up & dilute and present it to the New generation of "American Jains"?
In my opinion, any form of moderation/modification/dilution in the preachings/beliefs/rituals/stotra/sutra, Jin Agna na viruddh che..

Dear Pravin Bhai
ReplyDeleteJai Jinendra
Inducting raw Jain kids and youth to Jainism through the Jain Pathshala is a commendable task undertaken by You and your Team. My Salutation to all.
It is essential to train and educate our succeeding generations into the finest traditions and values offered by Great scientific religion- The Jain Religion.
The task becomes more challenging in the Society such as USA where the materialism and consumerism is at its peak.
It is further heartening to learn that the Jain education is imparted to students of all Jain Sects under one platform.
In fact time has come that we all Jains must unite and bridge the artificial divide created by our peers and their blind followers. I always believe that there is no major difference so far as core of Jainism is concern. The difference is about practices and rituals.
The teaching methodology , I suppose is more on evolving scientific basis and real life illustrations.
I am sure this initiative must be adopted in all States of USA and also in other Countries where Jain population is located. I will spread your message to my friends and relatives settled in USA and other countries .
Just for your information, with the initiative taken by me , The Jain Vishwa Bharti-A deemed University at Ladnu-Rajasthan -India eslablished
BHAGWAN MAHAVEER INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH CENTER (BMIRC)
If I can be of any assistance ,please do write me.
Best wishes . May Lord Mahaveera give you constant guidance and strength to sustain and expand this initiative.
I'm myself a non Jain but I have got so much to learn about Jainism from your website that mere saying thanks is not enough. After reading so many agams I'm now a practicising Hindu-Jain. I have a strong feeling to contribute or provide a helping hand to you. I'm a software engg. by profession, let me know in case I can be of any help to you in some way.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good thing you have incorporated American culture to attract the youth but be warned & extra careful because American culture is pro women backed by radical feminist movement. I understand that Jains believe in Anekantvada so they respect other religions & culture & can coexist peacefully among them but American culture is such that there are only few positive things & many negative things.
Even in my profession I've met many Jains but their way of living is absolutely non jain. They enjoy drinking, partying, have extra marital affairs, eat meat, etc… In fact I was shocked to know they are Jains & I know much better about Jainism than them. Already the % of Jains in India is too less. On top of it Jain youth is also getting too much attracted to American culture & is getting strayed from the noble path of Jainism. I feel a deep concern about it.
Keep on doing your great work. Let the blessing & teachings of supreme Jinendra be upon us to guide us to the path of salvation.
Jai Jinendra Pravinji, It is awesome work by JAINA in preserving jain ethos among young jains of north america. Understanding the core concept of jainism precedes rituals. Rituals and gender inequality were subsequent additions.
ReplyDelete"Those who are outside the presence of paramartha or Supreme Self even though observe vows, restraints, and rules of conduct and practice austerities are devoid of right knowledge. .. "(Samayasaram - 153)

Pravin Bhai, Jai Jinendra! Firstly I would say, it's a great work done by you and people behind this. Thank you for putting this very important topic. I would like to put my thoughts on some points:
ReplyDeleteINTER-RELIGION MARRIAGES: 70% Jain children are marrying Americans. Jain children are well educated, and is hard for them to digest traditional arrange marriage. So they want to marry someone whom they already know from some time.
The issue is when Jain children go to Temple, they are following somewhat of Bhrahmcharya, and they hardly have any chance to interact with other Jain outside the Temple.
Jain Milan is one of the best way, but for arrange marriage only. What about Love marriage within Jain community? Can Jain Milan start a new Jain Dating site?
Many parents don’t want to discuss marriages at home, until children’s education is complete. But parents never get to know how and when children are inclining towards others in their schools/colleges. So parents in many cases never get a chance to discuss with their children about marrying within Jain community during their Schools/Colleges.
I think that Pathshalas can play an important role by teaching teenage Jain children the benefits of marrying within same Jain community. By this Jain children will be encouraged to interact with each other outside Temple, increasing the chances of marriage within Jain community.
MEN & WOMEN EQUALITY: Digambar Acharya Pushpadanta Sagar Ji Maharaj, said its women who are stopping themselves from doing certain rituals like Idols ‘prachal’. Women has to step forward and break these unjustified barriers, but they don’t do so as to avoid any conflict. So I think, the duty now is on JAINA and various American Jain Temples leaders, to discuss this matter in their meetings and consider to welcome/ invite women to perform those male-dominated rituals.
SUPERIORITY OF JAINISM OVER OTHER RELIGIONS: I think it’s okay to say that Jainism is superior over other religions, because: 1) Every religion call itself superior over others, so why not us. If we don’t call our religion superior, then it will be easier for others to downgrade us. Jain is a religion and not any other environmental group. 2) Jainism is the most peaceful religion in the world, also said by many Non-Jain people in Youtube videos. So by calling Jainism as superior to others, should not be considered as wrong.
Please forgive me, if I have said anything wrong or hurt anyone by mistake.
Jai Jinendra
Amit Jain
Dear Pravin K Shah,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your email on the next generation of American Jains. You´re making several really good points regarding both challenges and solutions. I share your hope that Jainism will continue to grow in America, and that it will do so as a secular, ecumenical, gender equal, and vegan movement.
Also, thank you much for the work that is put into jainelibrary.org. It has been of great help to me, personally and professionally.
I´m not a Jain (or at least I´m not born a Jain), but an academic philosopher working in ethics. I discovered Jainism three years ago and spent last summer at International School for Jain Studies in New Delhi. Although my background is in Anglo-American ethics, especially bioethics, I´m increasingly intrigued by Jain philosophy. Indeed, I think I will write a short book on Jain philosophy intended for Western academic philosophers and philosophy students. The book is tentatively called Jainism: Utilitarian Religion and I´m happy to let you know that Oxford University Press has expressed an interest in publishing it (I have published with them previously). Of course, I will need to do a lot of research and writing before the book is done, so this is a 3-5 year project, but I´m happy to let you know that the project is in the making -- and that, to a large extent, Jainelibrary has made it possible.
Thank you for the impressive work that you´re doing. It is greatly appreciated.
All the best,
Ole Martin Moen

Respected Pravinbhai and the Team,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations and salutations for your long term vision and hard core efforts for the great heritage of Jain philosophy.
Yes, it has to encompass all logical minds without deviating from the fundamentals.
All the best.

Wishing you all the best in preserving Jain values & traditions in the USA. The next generation of children & grand children in USA should be encouraged to follow the Jain traditions, otherwise they are very likely to forget the same.

Let the blessing & teachings of supreme Jinendra be upon us to guide us to the path of salvation.
hi,
Deletelooks good to have faith in jain religion.
i agree many of jain are not following its principal.
basically what i can understand from it is that in India it is your birth give you right to follow this religion but from my point is jain religion is so much micro that everyone cant understand it and not able to follow it.
it is like diamond which is known by Johari only not by any layman.
we need degree to enter any field but not same for religious practices so forget about those people and history says this religion is become more colorful by non jain as same as jain.
if you put any 1oth fail student to Phd classes what happen to that person is same what we see today in jains.
by the way i am Doctor and residing in surat.
Its wonderful and great efforts. All the best!!

Dear Pravinbhai,
ReplyDeletei am very much new to your blog.
i belongs to Gujarat where our english writing are very much weak so please pardon me for same in below writing.
first of all i will congratulate your team for such a good effort of pathshala.
it is very easy to comment on any activity but it is really difficult task to perform in reality.
one thing is written that our religion is Purush pradhan and in todays world it is debating issue.
what i understand from it is - in hindu and Jain religion - both are purush pradhan- sometime word interpretation are different.
it is somewaht like word" Dharma" in literature we will find many meaning of "Dharma" and it used accordingly.
same thing is with Word"Yoga"
so here dont go for physical characteristic of word "Purush".
our religion are far beyound physical thing which we know todays so find out correct meaning of Purusha according to jain science.
i feel it shows male and female characteristic rather than physics.
A person with higher Purush charecter is may be Male or Female physically.
it is like every emotion has two opposite end and it is not possible to remain present in same individual, like darkness is absence of light only so some part of emotion are present in one and other part is present in other.
when you image any Male or Purush dont think only physically but also list of some character which we mostly found in Male but that doesnt mean it is absent in female, if any female posses all those character than though she is physically female but in way of emotion she is consider as PURUSH
so for going to Moksha,an individual need certain characterand that belongs to Male - most of time.
science is ever changing stream and aagam is came from kewalgyani tirthankar. one side we say our aagam are perfect one and other side we try to modify thing.
instead we need to put such debatle issue as open source and accept today we logically not able to explain it but we are working on it.
once again congratulate to all team member.
